eBook readers have been in the news lately. Here’s a sampling of what’s going on.
- Apple iPad Sales Top One Million – Apple reports that only 28 days after the first iPad went on the market, sales of the new tablet have topped one million. Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, commented, “One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone.”
- Kobo Reader Goes On Sale – A newcomer to the eBook reader club, the Kobo eBook reader went on sale last weekend at Indigo Books. An entry level model without wireless and all the other bells and whistles associated with pricier models, the Kobo will probably attract readers on a budget. It’s expected to retail for $149.
- Nook Reader Software Upgrade – Barnes & Noble Bookstores recently announced that a new firmware upgrade – v1.3 – is available for their Nook Reader.
- Amazon Kindle Upgrade Available – Trying to head off competition from Apple’s iPad and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Reader, Amazon has announced an upgrade to the Kindle. The upgrade, available for both the basic edition and the DX, will feature several changes including a Facebook and Twitter link-up.
- Google announces Google Edition – Google’s latest rollout, Google Editions, is coming soon. Beginning in June or July you may be able to purchase your eBooks through Google’s book service. Google service is expected to link to other book sellers instead of carrying product themselves.
