Can the Kindle Compete Against the iPad?

With Apple’s new iPad out in stores you’re probably wondering whether it makes sense to purchase the Kindle DX.  I mean, the iPad is. . . well, it’s the iPad.  It’s cool.  It’s slick.  Everybody wants one, right?  Well, before you go jump in the car and head down to your neighborhood Apple store you should probably take a minute to review the good ‘ol Kindle DX.

I mention the iPad because I think it’s a fair comparison.  To start with, their both about the same size, although the Kindle is about 40% heavier.  That said, the Kindle has slightly better resolution than the iPad (1200 x 800) and has an outstanding battery life.  The Kindle uses no power to maintain its display due to what the folks at Amazon call e-ink technology.  Basically, the Kindle wakes up and prints a page to the screen and then powers down while you’re reading it.  The Kindle can go for several days on a single charge.  The iPad can’t say that.

The Kindle DX is great for reading eBooks, but not much more.  That’s where the iPad will outshine its competitor.  However, if you’re looking for something to read with then you’ll probably enjoy the Kindle more.  Best of all, prices for Kindle eBooks are cheaper than those for the iPad and there’s a better selection.

Of course, only time will tell how the Kindle will fare against the iPad and the other newcomers.  For right now though, the Kindle’s here to stay.
